Britt’s Story

Here’s my story. Five years ago, August 2012, I moved from my childhood home in Chino Hills, California to live on my own in Tempe, Arizona. I had just gradated from community college with my AA in Interdisciplinary Studies and was hoping I could succeed at Arizona State University as a Creative Writing major. This wasn’t my dream school and I was more so just ready to get my education over with – which of course didn’t go exactly as planned.

I got accepted into the Creative Writing program but still had all these hoops to jump through because my community college education didn’t quite satisfy requirements. I started to lose steam after the first year and realized my chronic depression that I had stopped medicating properly was returning. This made finishing school much more difficult and added way more time to my plan than I had expected. I started getting treatment which helped slightly, but didn’t take away the feelings of doubt I had grown in myself and in the education system.

In 2014, my significant other moved in with me and we began planning a future together. I was about to be done with school, or so I thought, so we moved to North Phoenix where I would take my remaining classes online. I also began working at Lush Cosmetics as a Brand Ambassador. I actually had quite a few more credits to take and felt like I was never going to finish what I started. But I had to.

Eventually I did in 2016. I received a BA in English from ASU and I could finally breathe a sigh of relief. It hadn’t been the journey I wanted but I had made it through and could move forward.

After transferring to a new location at Lush, my partner and I moved to a little suburb west of Phoenix called Surprise. We had just adopted a puppy to accompany my 7 year old terrier, so we needed a backyard. I found us a nice little house with a yard and promised him we wouldn’t move again for a few years as we were going to settle in and focus on starting our family … or so we thought.

Spring 2017 brought some changes. I was finally burnt out at Lush and feeling like I needed to do something drastic. So I quit. Then took a trip back home to California  to hang out with some friends and family and reset my brain. I wanted to come back to AZ with a new plan. A couple weeks after my return my partner was offered a transfer to Denver, Colorado.

Denver was on a mental list of possible places to to live if we could ever afford to. The timing of the transfer couldn’t have been better. It all happened so fast and now we’ve been here for a few months and I couldn’t be more at home. I’m still feel like things are a bit surreal here, and that at any moment I’m going to have to go back to AZ because this is just a vacation, or something crazy.

I’m starting this site so that I can share my writing and start my dream of being a freelance copy-editor. This Write Here is the brand I am making for myself and hope you will follow along in my new journey!

  1. This is awesome! I’m happy for you and by jealous, Arizona is horrible. I’m happy things are going good and that you started this! Looking forward to reading more.

  2. I am so pleased that you took up your pen (as it were) to begin writing once more! I look forward to reading more of your adventures!

  3. Well, I am so happy for you guys. A bit sad for me(if we are being honest) that I just moved back to So Cal to be closer to my kids. Wasn’t expecting one of them to whisk off to Colorado. I do realize he is a grown man and has to make his way in this world. Just was hoping I would be closer for my grandchildren. But, with that being said, I love you a lot and want nothing but happiness for you!! I am so excited that you are getting to do what you love. I will keep you in my prayers and look forward to seeing your future writings. Sounds like this new adventure is Write up your alley. Lol……xoxoxoxoxoxoxox
